LIME MORTAR SPECIFIED FOR ABILITY TO RECYCLE BRICK
For the design of the National Trust’s new central offices, constructed in Brunel’s 19th century rail yard in Swindon, architects Feilden Clegg wanted to ensure the building offered the most sustainable solution possible within a tight budget. It also had to match the surrounding, industrial period architecture.
In keeping with their green ethos, the client wanted to eliminate the need for cement and make the structure recyclable. Limetec®, a traditional hydraulic lime mortar from Lime Technology proved to be the perfect eco friendly product to help Feilden Clegg Bradley meet this brief.
Due to the softness of lime mortar, it allows masonry to be recycled when the building comes to the end of its life as it can be removed from the brick without causing damage. Cement based mortar is actually stronger than the brick and therefore causes damage to the brick when it is removed.
